Lorient defeats winless Montpellier

Bafetimbi Gomis scored twice as Lyon came from behind to beat Troyes 4-1 in the second round of the French league as the country experienced its worst heat wave in years.

All the goals were in the second half, with Troyes winger Jean-Christophe Bahebeck giving his team the lead in the 47th minute.

Lyon dominated the rest of the match, having 60 percent of possession and hitting back through Gomis in the 51st, Michel Bastos in the 65th, Lisandro Lopez in the 89th and Gomis again in added time.

Lorient scored two goals in the final minutes to win 2-1 against defending champion Montpellier, which led through an early strike by Emmanuel Herrera, the Argentine striker who arrived in the offseason to replace Olivier Giroud.

Ludovic Giuly was prominent as Lorient equalized through Alain Traore in the 90th minute before Jeremie Aliadiere struck the winner in stoppage time.

While Lorient has four points after two rounds, Montpellier is winless with just one. Its team of homegrown players is yet to replicate the form that led to last year's success. Although the team was missing several key players because of injury and suspension on Saturday.

In other results, Toulouse defeated Saint-Etienne 2-1; Brest beat Evian Thonon Gaillard 1-0; Bastia won 2-1 against Reims; and Valenciennes and Nice played to a 0-0 draw.

The matches were played in 37 degrees temperatures (98 Fahrenheit).
