Klinsmann says Donovan has work to do

U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann is monitoring Landon Donovan and says the midfielder has work to do to earn back his spot in the national team.

A member of the last three American World Cup squads, the 31-year-old Donovan returned for the Los Angeles Galaxy on March 30 following a sabbatical of nearly four months. The U.S. has friendlies against Belgium on May 29 and Germany on June 2 ahead of three World Cup qualifiers against Jamaica and Honduras from June 7-18.

Klinsmann said Wednesday ''there are players clearly ahead of Landon Donovan right now.''

Klinsmann left open the possibility that midfielder Stuart Holden could make the Americans' CONCACAF Gold Cup squad. Holden returned in February following a knee injury that limited him to one game in nearly two years.
