It was initially feared that the centre-back was facing three weeks of rehabilitation after damaging a hamstring in the 3-3 Champions League draw at FC Twente.

But former Arsenal man Gallas, who had been captaining Tottenham prior to his injury, could be ready to face Newcastle in his club's next home match.

"William Gallas' injury is not as bad as we first feared, he could be fit in another week," manager Harry Redknapp said in The Times.

The Frenchman had played 13 consecutive matches before suffering his injury, but he will not be guaranteed to return to the first team as Michael Dawson has regained fitness and Ledley King might avoid surgery on a groin injury.

"Ledley's training. If he doesn't need an operation he could be back soon," said Redknapp.
