Andy Carroll scored a powerful header to give England a 1-0 lead over Sweden at halftime of their Group D match Friday at the European Championship.

Carroll met a perfect cross into the area from captain Steven Gerrard in the 23rd minute as Sweden was again exposed in the air, demonstrating exactly why coach Roy Hodgson elected to start the tall Liverpool forward up front.

Sweden conceded two goals from headers in a 2-1 loss against Ukraine in the opening round, and would be eliminated from the tournament with another loss.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic tested Joe Hart with a low shot from distance in the 20th but didn't cause much trouble for the England goalkeeper.
