Uruguayan giants Penarol closed in on a place in the Copa Libertadores last 16 as a 2-1 win over Argentinian side Godoy Cruz took them to the top of Group 8.

Juan Manuel Olivera opened the scoring for Penarol three minutes before half-time after pouncing on a loose ball following a corner, but a 57th-minute own goal by Dario Rodriguez brought the teams level.

Godoy Cruz presser for a winner but were caught on the counter-attack and Nicolas Freitas scored the 70th minute winner.

Penarol will be certain of a place in the next stage if they avoid defeat against another Argentinian side, Independiente, in the final round of group games, but could qualify even if they lose.
