The Paraguayan soccer star who was shot in the head at point-blank range in a Mexico City bar in January is to be released from a rehab clinic this month.

Salvador Cabanas is expected to leave the Fleni Clinic on May 23. Director Lisandro Olmos said Friday that Cabanas is experiencing vision problems but his physical recovery is nearly complete. Surgeons had to leave a bullet fragment in his skull.

Olmos says Cabanas has no memory of the Jan. 25 shooting in the upscale neighborhood in Mexico City. Cabanas played in the city for Club America.

His name was left off a preliminary World Cup roster submitted a few days ago by Paraguay. Olmos does not rule out Cabanas playing again.
