Atletico Mineiro held by strugglers
Brazilian Campeonato leaders Atletico Mineiro were held to a 1-1 draw by struggling Atletico Goianiense Wednesday night.
Goianiense went into the game bottom but stunned the leaders with a 10th minute goal from Dias Luz Ernandes.
However, the hosts had Macedo Joilson sent off 11 minutes later and within seven minutes Caldeira Bernard levelled - and that was how it stayed.
Second-placed Fluminense failed to take advantage as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Cruzeiro.
Wellington gave the hosts a third-minute lead but Fred rescued a point for Fluminense two minutes before half-time in a game which saw Cruzeiro's Charles and Fluminense substitute Matheus Carvalho dismissed in the 72nd minute.
Fourth-placed Gremio slipped up, going down 2-1 at home to mid-table Portuguesa.
Monteiro Ananias (27) and Bruno Menezes Soares (83) had the visitors in control before Kleber set up a tense finish with an 88th-minute reply.
Two goals in the space of four second half minutes from Elkeson and Clarence Seedorf gave Botafogo a 2-0 win over Sport Recife, while Santana Gabriel (11) and Rodrigo Souza (90) gave Bahia victory at Ponte Preta by the same scoreline.
Palmeiras moved out of the bottom three with a 1-0 win over Flamengo. Hernan Barcos got the 33rd-minute breakthrough, three minutes after the visitors had Barreto Ibson dismissed.
Welker Almeida's 13th-minute penalty was added to by Araujo's double as Nautico defeated Sao Paulo 3-0.
