Williams, UMass hold off Rhode Island 70-67

AMHERST, Mass (AP) Chaz Williams scored 16 points and Massachusetts dominated from the foul line and rebounding for a 70-67 win over Rhode Island on Wednesday.

The Minutemen (22-5, 9-4 Atlantic 10), made 21 of 31 free throws and had a 41-28 rebounding advantage over the Rams (12-17, 4-10), who were 11 of 18 from the foul line.

Trey Davis came off the bench to add 13 points and Sampson Carter had 11. Derrick Gordon had 9 points and 10 rebounds and Williams contributed six assists.

Gilvydas Biruta had 17 points for Rhode Island with Xavier Munford adding 16, E.C. Matthews 14 and Hassan Martin 13. The Rams' bench was out-scored 19-4.

A three-point play by Jarelle Reischel gave URI, which trailed by nine earlier, a 60-56 lead with 4:46 to play.

UMass regained the lead and Williams and Davis made four free throws in the final minute to secure the win.
