GREEN BAY, Wis. — Packers tight end Jermichael Finley suffered a "very mild concussion" on Day 1 of training camp and was not around for the team's Friday morning practice, according to a message from his wife.
Coach Mike McCarthy did not mention Finley's concussion to the media Thursday. But Finley's absence on the field Friday was immediately noticed, which led his wife, Courtney, to update her husband's status on Twitter.
"If you're wondering where (Finley) is ... He got a slight very mild concussion at practice yesterday & protocol is to sit for a few days," she tweeted during Friday's practice. "He's going crazy because he feels amazing & wants to be out there with his team but he understands the precautionary measures."
Her tweets regarding the injury have since been deleted.
McCarthy confirmed Finley's concussion after Friday's practice.
"He'll be out for a couple days," McCarthy said.
Finley's concussion happened during a practice in which the Packers were in shells, meaning their only protective gear was a helmet. No pads are worn during practices in shells. Green Bay's first padded practice is Saturday morning.
Finley signed a two-year, $15 million deal this offseason to stay in Green Bay after catching 55 passes for a career-high 767 yards last season.
Finley joins a list of Packers' injured players that includes key contributors linebacker Desmond Bishop (calf), fullback John Kuhn (knee), tight end Andrew Quarless (knee) and offensive tackle Derek Sherrod (leg).
Packers defensive lineman Anthony Hargrove, who is one of the four players suspended by the NFL for a role in the New Orleans Saints bounty program, was also not at practice Friday.
"He was excused today for a personal matter that he had to attend to out of town," McCarthy said. "I expect him back tonight ready to go tomorrow."
