Valverde throws two scoreless innings

The Tigers will soon have a decision to make on Jose Valverde.

Valverde pitched for the third time in extended spring training Monday.

Valverde threw two scoreless innings against the Canadian National team in a scrimmage at the Disney complex. He did not allow a hit or a walk and struck out four.

Valverde also threw a scoreless inning last Friday and a bullpen session last Wednesday.

In other news, Tigers first baseman Prince Fielder won the American League Player of the Week award.

It is the fifth time that Fielder has been a player of the week and first time in the American League.

Fielder batted .632 with four doubles, two home runs, 11 RBIs, five runs scored and nine walks in the six games.

Last week Fielder led all major league hitters in batting average, RBI, slugging percentage (1.158) and on-base percentage (.733). He was second in walks, tied for second in doubles, third in hits and tied for third in total bases with 22.

Fielder is in the midst of a nine-game hitting streak in which he has hit .533 with four doubles, four home runs and 18 RBIs.
