Texas Tech QB Mayfield to transfer, miss bowl game
Texas Tech quarterback Baker Mayfield has decided to transfer, the school announced.
His decision comes after winning the Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year Award on Wednesday. Mayfield won't be with the team for its Holiday Bowl matchup against Arizona State.
Mayfield told the Austin American-Statesman that he was leaving because of a miscommunication between him and the coaches, and he told coach Kliff Kingsbury of his plans to leave after learning that Michael Brewer would start the bowl game.
Mayfield reportedly met with coaches on Tuesday to tell them of his transfer plans. A source told FOX Sports Southwest that Mayfield told several teammates later Tuesday that it was time for him to "move on."
Brewer was expected to start for the Red Raiders entering the season, but a back injury kept him off the field and mostly in spot duty until playing most of the fourth quarter in Texas Tech's season-ending loss to Texas.
Mayfield, a walk-on true freshman, started the first five games before suffering a knee injury and losing his starting job to Davis Webb. Mayfield regained his starting job for the final two games of the season and finished with 2,315 yards, 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions
