ARLINGTON, Texas — On the field, the Texas Rangers made their fans very happy this past weekend, sweeping the Seattle Mariners at home. But it’s what they did off of it (with the help of their fans) that will leave the most lasting impact.
Throughout the three-game series, the club collected donations to aid relief efforts for the city of West, Texas, site of a fertilizer-plant explosion on Wednesday that killed 14 and left hundreds injured. By the time the Mariners had been swept out of town, two large meeting rooms had been filled with essential supplies as well as thousands of dollars in gift cards. Fans, team employees and the Texas Rangers Foundation also teamed to contribute around $40,000 in cash donations.
The Rangers, with the help of the FOX Sports Southwest Fan Express, will deliver the items to West this week.
A blood drive at Rangers Ballpark Sunday also proved fruitful as Carter BloodCare reported that 80 donors were processed. That number equates to more than 200 lives saved.
