SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Padres today announced they have named Sam Geaney director of player development, responsible for managing all of the organization's player development efforts, including working with roving coordinators as well as managers and coaches at each of the club's affiliates. Executive Vice President/General Manager A.J. Preller made the announcement.

"We're excited to have Sam join our staff," said Preller. "He has a smart baseball mind and a strong work ethic that will help shape our player development philosophy."

Geaney, 29, joins the Padres after serving in the Oakland Athletics organization for the past nine seasons. He most recently served as coordinator of international scouting for the past three seasons where he was responsible for overseeing the scouting and signing of players throughout Latin America and the Pacific Rim. He began his career in baseball as an intern for the A's baseball operations department in 2006, and joined the staff full-time in 2007 as an assistant in the scouting department, simultaneously serving as an area scout for Northern California. After being promoted to coordinator of scouting after the 2009 season he was named the club's coordinator of international scouting in January 2012.

A native of Oakland, Calif., he graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 2007 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science.
