The Detroit Tigers finally received some good news Tuesday.

Justin Verlander, who left Monday night's start in Pittsburgh after just one inning because of shoulder soreness, doesn't appear to be seriously injured.

Tigers manager Brad Ausmus told reporters in Pittsburgh on Tuesday that an MRI showed no major structural damage and Verlander would likely not need to go on the disabled list.

Ausmus said that Verlander does have inflammation in multiple spots on his shoulder and will probably miss at least one start. Robbie Ray, who's starting Tuesday night's game in Pittsburgh, would likely take Verlander's place on Sunday in Detroit.

The Tigers also announced that Anibal Sanchez has been placed on the DL with a strained right pectoral muscle, and Buck Farmer will be called up to start Wednesday at Comerica Park against the Pirates.

Farmer, chosen in the fifth round of the 2013 draft, is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA in two starts with Double-A Erie. He was 10-5 with a 2.60 ERA in 18 starts with Class-A West Michigan.

Farmer is taking the place of Rick Porcello, who pitched in the 19-inning game Sunday. Porcello will pitch Friday night's game at Comerica against the Seattle Mariners.

Max Scherzer pitches Thursday at Comerica against the Pirates.

David Price, originally set to throw Friday, will have his start pushed back to Saturday.
