MLS Roundup: LA Galaxy dispatch Portland, RSL secures Rocky Mountain Cup

Yannick Djalo opened Levi's Stadium in style to give the Earthquakes all three points in the first game at the 49ers' new venue. Chris Wondolowski provided the telling pass over the top and ushered Djalo through behind the Sounders FC defense. Djalo made no mistake to provide San Jose with the lead three minutes before the break. Wondolowski preserved the narrow advantage when he headed Chad Barrett's header off the line to ensure his side's work yielded the desired end product at the final whistle.
LA Galaxy 3 – Portland 1
Diego Valeri struck first for the Timbers inside the opening quarter of an hour, but the Galaxy roared back to claim victory at the StubHub Center. Gyasi Zardes turned home Robbie Rogers’ inviting cross on the stroke of halftime to set the stage for the decisive second half. Robbie Keane settled matters by nodding home Landon Donovan’s cross and tucking away from the spot to send the Galaxy to a second victory in six days.
New York 2 – New England 1
Bradley Wright-Phillips scored his league-leading 18th goal of the season to propel the 10-man Red Bulls over the Revolution in Harrison. Charlie Davies celebrated his first goal in three years when he headed home Teal Bunbury’s cross after 20 minutes. Matt Miazga compounded the Red Bulls’ frustrating first half when he procured a red card for his tackle on Lee Nguyen moments before the halftime whistle. Dax McCarty engineered a prompt response with his clever chip two minutes after play resumed before Wright-Phillips curled inside the far post just after the hour to decide the affair.
Colorado 0 – Real Salt Lake 1
RSL claimed the Rocky Mountain Cup with a resolute defensive display in Commerce City. Javier Morales benefited from Chris Wingert’s persistence on the left and stroked home his resulting square pass inside the opening quarter of an hour. Aaron Maund complicated matters for the visitors when he received a red card for denying a goal scoring opportunity moments into the second half. RSL maintained its composure to allow Nick Rimando to join Kevin Hartman atop the all-time MLS shutouts chart (112) at full time.

TFC delivered on Ryan Nelsen’s midweek request and secured maximum points at Stade Saputo. Gilberto smashed home Dominic Oduro’s cross to give the visitors the lead after 11 minutes. Luke Moore finished off a quick break with a simple finish nine minutes into the second half to guarantee the points against the out-of-sorts Impact.
Chicago 1 – Columbus 1
Federico Higuain pounced moments into the second half to condemn the Fire to yet another draw. Mike Magee held his nerve from 12 yards and slotted home the opener eight minutes before the break after Tyson Wahl handled. Higuain responded after a comedy of Fire errors off the second-half kickoff placed him in a position to tuck home the equalizer. Both sides attempted to conjure a winner at Toyota Park, but they ultimately resigned themselves to a share of the points instead.
Sporting Kansas City 1 – Philadelphia 1
Brian Brown collected his first MLS goal to lift the Union to a point at Sporting Park on Friday. Graham Zusi made a late run and slotted home Toni’s delicate feed to stake the home side to a lead after 54 minutes. Brown -- acquired on loan from Jamaican side Harbour View last month – met Ray Gaddis’ cross and snapped his header inside the near post to snatch a point in the 71st minute.
