Mike Smith lands contract extension

At the end of the regular season, when the Atlanta Falcons had finished with the second-best record in franchise history, head coach Mike Smith had reached some rare milestones.

Not only had he become the first coach in franchise history to record back-to-back winning seasons, but he topped it with his third and his best yet. For only the second time, and for the first in 30 years, the Falcons had the top seed in the NFC playoffs, with a 13-3 mark.

It seemed assured not only that Smith would receive a contract extension but that he was starting to show the potential for a lengthy coaching run like Andy Reid
