LA Kings honor passing of Gordie Howe with epic photo

Published Jun. 10, 2016 1:52 p.m. ET

On Friday, while the world was still mourning the loss of Muhammad Ali at his funeral in Louisville, hockey legend Gordie Howe passed away at the age of 88.

'Mr. Hockey' won four Stanley Cups with the Red Wings and was the idol of fellow Canadian Wayne Gretzky ... which brings us to the photo.

The Kings honored Howe with a pic of Howe and Gretzky. Howe's final season ... at the age of 52!! ... was the rookie season (1979-80) of Gretzky, who would become 'The Great One' after his Hall of Fame career (eight seasons of which he spent with the Los Angeles Kings).

Ironic enough, Gretzky would go on to break Howe's NHL records of goals (801) and points (1,850) before he retired in 1999.

A sad day for all of hockey, indeed.
