Florida freshman Dontay Bassett to miss 2016-17 season with stress fracture

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida freshman Dontay Bassett will miss the season because of a stress fracture in his right foot.

Bassett will have surgery, and with a recovery that is expected to take between four and six months, the Gators decided to redshirt Bass for the season.

A 6-foot-9 forward from Oakland, California, Bassett probably wouldn't have played much in his first season. Florida returns John Egbunu, Devin Robinson, Justin Leon and Kevarrius Hayes in the frontcourt, and expect freshman forward Keith Stone to make an immediate impact.

Bassett was a team captain in high school, helping Oldsmar Christian to a runner-up finish in the Sunshine Independent Athletic Association state championship last season.
