LAKELAND, Fla. -- The Detroit Tigers lost their first player to serious injury.

Right-hander Eduardo Sanchez left Wednesday's game in Kissimmee after facing just one batter in the seventh inning because of an elbow injury.

Sanchez underwent an MRI Thursday morning, which revealed that he had suffered a stress fracture of the olecranon, the tip of the elbow.

The Tigers said Sanchez would be out for an extended period of time but did not know yet whether surgery would be necessary.

Sanchez, 25, was in the mix for either a spot in the Tigers' bullpen or a starting job with Triple-A Toledo.

Sanchez was 0-1 with a 5.68 ERA in four games with the Chicago Cubs last season. He has appeared in 47 major league games, going 3-3 with a 3.68 ERA.
