The Angels will be without an important member of their bullpen, at least for the next three days. Left-hander Scott Downs has been placed on Major League Baseball’s family medical emergency list, and outfielder Kole Calhoun was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake, Angels announced.

Downs, who is second on the team with nine saves, must remain on the list for at least three days and a maximum of seven days. His absence means the Angels won’t have a left-hander in their bullpen for the three-game series against the Boston Red Sox that begins Tuesday night at Angel Stadium.

Downs returned from a stay on the disabled list on Aug. 18 and has a 3.08 ERA. But since the All-Star break, he has given up 15 hits and 12 earned runs in eight innings, a 13.50 ERA. Opposing batters are hitting .395 off him.
