David Letterman finally explains why he grew this wild Santa beard

David Letterman shocked everyone when photos appeared of him in March excerising in St. Barts while sporting this new look:

Yes, it's hard to believe that's the same guy who became a late-night television legend by creating "Late Show with David Letterman."

So yeah, the shaved head, Santa beard Letterman was a shock to the system.

Letterman, who is happy and healthy and enjoying the heck out of retirement, appeared on the "TODAY" show on Friday and explained why he let himself go after stepping away from the late-night television business.
