Former Wisconsin guard Sharif Chambliss has been named an assistant coach for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's basketball team.

Chambliss spent the past two seasons serving as the Badgers' video coordinator but has familiarity with the Panthers' program. He worked at UWM from 2006-08 as the men's basketball team's academic mentor.

Chambliss, a Racine native, also has held assistant coaching positions at UW-Platteville and Francis Marion University in South Carolina.

"Sharif is a high-energy guy who is very familiar with us and is part of our coaching family," UW-Milwaukee men's basketball coach Rob Jeter said in a press release. "He has strong ties both in Wisconsin and throughout the Midwest and will be able to add to our recruiting efforts immediately. He was also a standout player in the Big Ten, and he'll be able to use his experience to really help our guards. He's a great addition to our staff."

Jeter, who served as an assistant at Wisconsin from 2001-05, coached Chambliss' lone season as a player with the Badgers. Chambliss starred for three seasons at Penn State before transferring to Wisconsin for his final season. He earned a spot as a team captain and helped guide Wisconsin to the Elite Eight in 2005.

"I am really excited to be back in Milwaukee and to get the chance to work with one of my mentors," Chambliss said. "It is a homecoming of sorts to be back with the Panthers and to get another opportunity to work with a great group of coaches and student-athletes. The roots of our coaching tree run deep, and I have to thank Bo Ryan and the staff at Wisconsin, along with all of the other coaches I have worked with, for helping to prepare me for this opportunity.

"This is the next step in a career I have invested myself in and I am thankful for the opportunity the coaches and the athletic department leaders have given me. I plan on making the most of it."

Chambliss, a two-time honorable mention All-Big Ten point guard, scored 1,107 points in his college career. He played professionally in Portugal for two seasons.
