After adding eight assistants on Monday, Browns coach Mike Pettine is getting to work on the offensive side of the ball.  Pettine's background in the NFL is on the defensive side of the ball, so the hiring of his offensive coordinator is very important. The new coordinator will call the plays and is expected to be involved in targeting a quarterback this off-season,whether through free agency, trade or through the NFL Draft in May.

The Browns have confirmed to Fox Sports Ohio that former Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan will meet with the team this week, along with Raiders quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo to interview for the Browns offensive coordinator position. Reports have said that Shanahan will meet with the team on Wednesday, while DeFilippo will interview on Thursday.

Shanahan, 34, was fired along  with his father, Mike, after the 2013 season. Kyle Shanahan has been an offensive coordinator for the past six seasons in the NFL. He had been the Redskins' offensive coordinator since 2010 and prior to that he was the Texans' offensive coordinator in 2008-09. Shanahan's offenses have been among the top 10 in the NFL on four occasions, in terms of yards per game. His best two years were with the Texans in 2008-09 when they finished third and fourth. The Redskins finished fifth in the NFL in 2012 when Robert Griffin III had a breakout rookie season.

Shanahan, reportedly was up for the offensive coordinator positions with the Ravens and the Dolphins but the Ravens hired Gary Kubiak and the Dolphins hired former Eagles quarterback coach Bill Lazor.

DeFilippo, 35, has been the Raiders quarterbacks coach the past two seasons. He also was the Raiders quarterbacks coach in 2007-08 before he left for the Jets in 2009 as the assistant quarterbacks coach.  Before re-joining the Raiders, DeFilippo was the offensive coordinator as San Jose State for two seasons. DeFilippo is a native of Youngstown.

Pettine was the defensive coordinator for the Jets from 2009-12 and was on Rex Ryan's staff with DeFilippo in 2009. Pettine and Shanahan have never been on the same coaching staffs.

Other names mentioned as possible offensive coordinators for the Browns are Bears quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh, Cowboys quarterbacks coach Bill Callahan and former Titans' offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains.

Cavanaugh and Pettine worked together with the Ravens. The Cowboys hired Scott Linehan as their offensive coordinator, but reports are the Cowboys wouldn't let Callahan out of his contract.

Kubiak was rumored to be on the Browns list along with LSU offensive coordinator Cam Cameron. Kubiak was hired as the Ravens offensive coordinator and Cameron said he didn't plan on leaving LSU.

The only offensive coach the Browns have hired thus far is tight ends coach Brian Angelichio.

In other news, the Bills announced Tuesday that they have granted the Browns permission to interview defensive line coach Anthony Weaver. If he joins the Browns, he will be the fifth coach, including Pettine, who was on the Bills coaching staff last season.
