Gavin Floyd has not won a game since the 2012 season and underwent Tommy John surgeon in May, but the Atlanta Braves front office expects him to return to form after signing him to a one-year, $4 million deal to add veteran depth to the organization's young pitching corps.
The 30-year-old just completed a seven-season run with the Chicago White Sox in which he posted a 63-65 record and a 4.22 ERA. Floyd is expected to miss one to two months while completing his post-surgery rehab.
With offseason losses of Tim Hudson and Paul Maholm, the Braves starting rotation figures to be one of the youngest in baseball next season, including Mike Minor, Kris Medlen and Julio Teheran. The addition of Floyd guarantees the organization additional depth, whether it's on the 25- or 40-man roster.
As for the projected Opening Day rotation itself, the Braves reached an arbitration deal with Brandon Beachy for one year and $1.45 million.
Beachy returned from Tommy John surgery last season to pitch in five games, logging a 2-1 record with a 4.50 ERA before suffering from elbow tenderness and being shut down for the rest of the season.
