The Atlantic Coast Conference regular season is complete, and the difference between the top and bottom of the conference is significant.
Tobacco Road players performed the best in the league this past week, but the best player came from the Commonwealth of Virginia.
North Carolina is the regular-season champ in part because of Kendall Marshall’s amazing performance Saturday at Duke, but he didn’t make this week’s honor roll. Neither did Florida State’s Ian Miller, Wake Forest’s C.J. Harris, Maryland’s Terrell Stoglin nor Miami’s Kenny Kadji.
Here is this week’s ACC hoops honor roll:
Tyler Zeller, North Carolina: Zeller totaled 49 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in routs of Maryland and Duke in helping the Tar Heels win the ACC’s regular-season title. Zeller likely will win the ACC Player of the Year honor for his amazing senior season.
C.J. Leslie, North Carolina State: In victories over Miami and at Virginia Tech, the 6-foot-8 sophomore scored 21 and 18 points, respectively, and totaled 22 rebounds. He also blocked three shots versus the Hurricanes as the Wolfpack remained in contention for an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. Leslie has really elevated his game of late.
John Henson, North Carolina: The long and athletic forward totaled 32 points, 19 rebounds and four blocked shots in wins at home over Maryland by 24 points and at Duke by 18 points. Henson also picked up a pair of steals versus the Terrapins.
Michael Snaer, Florida State: The former McDonald’s All-American scored 35 points and had nine rebounds in wins at Virginia and at home over Clemson. Snaer had 23 points against the Tigers, as the Seminoles avenged a 20-point loss in January.
Scott Wood, North Carolina State: Finally, Wood got open and had plenty of good looks from the perimeter in a crucial home win over Miami and big road victory at Virginia Tech. Wood drained half of his 10 3-point attempts for 15 points versus the Canes and 3 of 7 during a 19-point effort against the Hokies. The 6-foot-6 Wood also snared 10 rebounds during the week.
Player of the Week
Mike Scott, Virginia: The 6-foot-8 senior scored 28 points in a last-second home loss to Florida State and then had 35 points and 11 rebounds in an overtime win at Maryland. He combined for 63 points and 21 rebounds for the week and made a huge push for ACC Player of the Year.
Team of the Week
North Carolina: The Tar Heels routed Duke in Durham to capture the regular-season ACC title and thrust themselves right back onto the national radar as national-championship contenders. Despite losing the way they have, plus losing a starter for the season in January, North Carolina still won the ACC and is playing exceptionally well at the right time of the season.
Disappointment of the Week
The ACC: The league is so down that four teams finished tied for last place at 4-12 in conference play. That means each of the four ACC tournament games Thursday will involve a team with only four league victories.
