LOS ANGELES (AP) Plans for a downtown village for nearly 17,000 Olympic athletes appear to be unraveling less than three months after Los Angeles was selected as the U.S. candidate for the 2024 Games.
City officials disclosed Wednesday that the private committee steering the bid is searching for alternatives to its initial proposal to use a rail yard the city doesn't own.
Councilman Mitch O'Farrell told a City Council committee that it could cost up to $2 billion to buy the rail site, clean it up and relocate the train yard - even before any construction would begin.
Los Angeles is up against Rome, Paris, Budapest, Hungary, and Hamburg, Germany, to ho9st the 2024 Olympics. The International Olympic Committee will make the selection in 2017.
