With no veteran backup in sight, Bengals turning to Keith Wenning

The Cincinnati Bengals are expected to stay in-house for their backup to new starting quarterback AJ McCarron, according to a report from the Cincinnati Enquirer.

The Bengals are set to promote Keith Wenning from the practice squad to play behind McCarron, who will likely start the remaining three games of the regular season after Andy Dalton broke his right thumb last Sunday. Wenning, a sixth-round pick of Baltimore in 2014, was signed by Cincinnati this summer.

According to the Enquirer, Wenning's experience in Hue Jackson's system apparently outweighed the prospect of bringing in a veteran with just a few days to get ready for Sunday's game in San Francisco. One obvious candidate would have been former Bengals backup Jason Campbell, who retired after appearing in four games off the bench for Cincinnati last season. Jackson said that Campbell has no plans to come out of retirement, and is not a candidate.

Wenning has yet to throw a regular season pass in his NFL career. He completed 6-of-13 passes for 44 yards and an interception in limited action during the preseason.
