While interviewing for head coaching gigs, Bears' OC Adam Gase says he grew up
Former Broncos, and current Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase remembers the chaos that surrounded him following Denver's second-round loss to Indianapolis in the 2014 playoffs.
Gase was looking for a job following Denver's firing of John Fox. He interviewed with the 49ers and Broncos, and was able to get a second interview with San Francisco. Gase found the whole process disorienting, according to an article in the Chicago Sun-Times.
"Everything happened so fast," Gase told the paper. "There is no way to prepare."
Neither Gase nor former Niners defensive coordinator Vic Fangio got the San Francisco gig, which went to Jim Tomsula.
"That time of year, you never know what the people that are hiring are looking for or what they want," Fangio told the Sun-Times. "So you try not to drive yourself crazy with that. It was good that I had some choices."
Fangio and Gase are coordinators on Fox's staff in Chicago. Fox is a big believer in allowing his coordinators to run their units. According to the Sun-Times article, Fox knows that empowering his coordinators gives them the skills needed to be able to run their own teams.
"You give them the authority to do it," Fox told the paper. "I'm involved because I'm the head coach, because I manage the game. So I'm involved in the game plan, all that kind of stuff, and really in all three phases."
Gase was interviewed for the Bears head coaching job - before the team went with Fox.
"That was a real growing-up experience for me," Gase told the newspaper. "But going through that many (interviews) in that short of a time, getting to meet the people that I met was a great experience."
Now that he's settled into his position, Gase has formed a bond with Fangio.
"Me and Vic have a great relationship," Gase told the Sun-Times. "I'm just glad I'm on his side."
