Unheralded Jeff Adams to start at left guard for Texans in Week 1

The Houston Texans will open the season Sunday with four starters returning from last year in right tackle Derek Newton, right guard Brandon Brooks, center Ben Jones, who played left guard last season and left tackle Duane Brown.

Joining them in the starting lineup Week 1 will be Jeff Adams, whom the team claimed on waivers from the Tennessee Titans last season.

"He’s worked hard to learn our system,” Houston coach Bill O’Brien said, per the Houston Chronicle. “He’s worked hard in the weight room. He’s worked hard on conditioning. He’s a tough-minded guy, a bright guy, lunch pail-type of guy.”

Xavier Su'a-Filo, Houston's second-round pick in 2014, was expected to be the starter entering training camp, but he missed the entire preseason and has been limited since returning to practice earlier this week. Su'a-Filo is reportedly recovering from a calf injury.

Adams signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent out of Columbia University in 2012. He's also spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals and Miami Dolphins, in addition to his stint with the Titans.

The 6-foot-7, 305-pound Adams has appeared in two regular-season games, both coming with the Texans last season. Sunday will be his first career start.
