Trent Williams Suspended For Four Games After Violating Substance Abuse Policy

The Washington Redskins have lost Trent Williams. This could derail their season.

The Washington Redskins were dealt a major blow to their offense on Tuesday afternoon. The team found out that their star left tackle, Trent Williams would be missing the next four games due to a violation of the NFL’s policy of substance abuse. NFL Network broke the news on Twitter.

Williams’ suspension is apparently stemming from a missed drug test. Per the Substance Abuse Policy, a player can be suspended if they fail to take a required drug test. Williams did just that, and he will not be playing in the next four games as a result. For those wondering about a possible appeal, Mike Jones of the Washington Post cleared that up on Twitter:

Williams’ absence will force veteran tackle Ty Nsekhe into the starting lineup for multiple weeks. Nsekhe is a fine swing tackle, and should do decent as a replacement, but he is still a major downgrade. Williams is a top five tackle in the league. Nsekhe is a high quality backup. That is the harsh reality of the situation.

It does not help the team’s cause that right tackle Morgan Moses was banged up last week. Moses will have a chance to heal during the bye week, but if he cannot get healthy, the Skins will be thin at tackle. That really could derail their chances of making a comeback in the division race.

The Washington Redskins offered this statement about Williams’ suspension.

Today, Trent Williams was suspended by the NFL under the terms of the Policy and Program on Substances of Abuse for the next four games. We met with Trent today to discuss this unfortunate news. Per the terms of the Policy, Trent will be permitted to participate in team meetings and workout at the Redskins’ facilities throughout this time. The Redskins are counting on Trent to help our team when he returns from suspension. Our focus will now turn to the Minnesota Vikings after our bye this upcoming weekend. Any questions related to this matter should be directed to the NFL or NFLPA.

That is about all that a team usually says when a player gets suspended. They are probably livid at Williams for making this mistake.

Overall, this is going to be bad news for the Redskins. The team is losing arguably their best offensive player for a key stretch during the season. If the Redskins cannot continue their offensive success, they will have issues and that could cause them to fall off as the season progresses.
