Steelers nose tackle McCullers feeling, looking trimmer

Steelers nose tackle Daniel McCullers didn't realize he lost that much weight this winter until his arrival at offseason workouts.

McCullers didn't go on any special diet or dive into an intense workout regimen, but he did change some bad habits, leading to a drop of 15 pounds from his listed weight of 365. His teammates noticed the change before he did.

"Everybody kept telling me that I looked good," McCullers told the Tribune-Review. "I was like, 'OK, but I don't know what I did.'"

Well that's not entirely the truth. The reason for McCullers' trimmed down physique -- no more Doritos, no more soda, and certainly no more extended video game sessions. He realized he had to get away from his old habits from high school and college, where his weight ballooned to over 400 pounds.

"I learned last year that it's a long season and you have to take care of your body,” McCullers said. "I was eating right and sweating every day (this offseason)."

McCullers already feels lighter on his feet, and hopes that the changed leads to more playing time on the field. Last year's sixth-round pick saw limited action in nine games last season behind fellow defensive tackle Steve McLendon.

"Especially when I am stretching," McCullers said. "I lift up my legs and they aren't as heavy. I feel that if I continue to work hard and do what I need to do that I will get playing time."
