Source: Browns sign RB Clayton
Seeking depth in an injury-plagued backfield, the Cleveland Browns have signed veteran running back Thomas Clayton, a source told FOXSports.com.
Clayton is returning to the Browns after spending time on the practice squad and two games on the 53-man roster last year. Clayton, 27, also was briefly with New England in 2010 and spent the 2011 preseason with Seattle before being released. He was a 2008 sixth-round draft pick by San Francisco.
Cleveland running back Modesto Hardesty is expected to miss at least the next two games after suffering a torn calf muscle in last Sunday’s 20-10 loss to San Francisco. Starting running back Peyton Hillis missed that contest because of an injured hamstring but may be ready to return Sunday against Houston.
The Browns (3-4) rank 29th in the NFL with an 87.6-yard rushing average and are tied with Denver for the fewest rushing touchdowns scored with two.
