Reshad Jones' injury forcing Dolphins to use CBs at safety

Published Sep. 17, 2015 1:45 p.m. ET

The Miami Dolphins will likely be without their two starting safeties this Sunday as Reshad Jones is dealing with a hamstring injury. He missed practice on Wednesday and the likelihood of him playing against the Jaguars is looking bleak.

With Jones joining Louis Delmas on the sidelines, the Dolphins are left with just three healthy safeties: Walt Aikens, Michael Thomas, and Jordan Kovacs. Because of that, the coaching staff has been forced to try cornerbacks at safety.

"I’ve done it before, just not here," cornerback Zack Bowman said, via Andrew Abramson of the Palm Beach Post. "It’s the same position at the end of the day, it’s just opposed to being outside you’re more inside now. My first six years years in Chicago, corners had to learn the safety position, learn how to play in the box. I felt like that experience does help."

The Dolphins do have some depth at cornerback which allows them to move Bowman around, but beyond Brent Grimes, Brice McCain, and Jamar Taylor, there's not a ton of talent.

Even Taylor, a former second-round pick, hasn't lived up to the expectations and can't always be considered a great option to start. It remains to be seen if Bowman or other corners will get time at safety against the Jaguars, but it's not the greatest situation to say the least.
