Report: Saints likely to release Marques Colston

Just a couple of weeks ago, the New Orleans Saints cut offensive lineman Jahri Evans, linebackers David Hawthorne and Ramon Humber, and receiver Seantavius Jones.

It appears that soon you can add Marques Colston to the list.

According to Mike Triplett, the Saints are “likely” to release the 10-year pro.

Triplett added more on ESPN’s website:

“The New Orleans Saints will likely release receiver Marques Colston in the coming days, according to a league source. Colston, who has had a remarkable 10-year career after being drafted in the seventh round out of Hofstra in 2006, is New Orleans’ all-time leading receiver and touchdown scorer. But he became the Saints’ third receiver last year and is due to make $3.2 million in salary and bonuses.”

Colston’s finest season with the Saints was 2007, which was his second year in the league. He finished with 98 receptions for 1,202 yards and 11 touchdowns, all career highs.

He has had a solid career, especially for a seventh-round pick. Colston has just under 10,000 career receiving yards (9,759) and has 72 touchdowns on 711 catches. That’s roughly a touchdown for every 10 catches.

After steadily dipping in production every year since 2012, one has to wonder if Colston will attempt to revitalize his career in a new uniform or hang up the cleats. He missed the final two games last season with a chest injury.
