Report: Dielman to announce retirement

Published Feb. 27, 2012 12:00 a.m. ET

San Diego Chargers guard Kris Dielman is likely to announce his retirement on the advice of doctors, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Monday, citing sources.

The four-time All-Pro left guard is set to reveal his intentions soon, but neither the team or Dielman would confirm the decision had been made.

Dielman, 31, finished the 2011 season on injured reserve and had reportedly been considering retirement since suffering a seizure following a concussion in a game in October.

Sources said he wants to play on but doctors have advised against it, saying his quality of life would be better in the long term if he walked away from the game, and that changed his decision.

Dielman was due a $1 million roster bonus next month and $4.5 million base salary in the final year of his contract.
