Ravens' Pitta likely to begin season on PUP list
If Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta plans to resume his playing career in 2015, he may have to wait until Week 7.
Pitta is likely to begin the season on the physically unable to perform list, according to a report in The Baltimore Sun. Such a move would force Pitta to miss the first six games of the season as he recovers a second time from a career-threatening hip injury.
Pitta ran through individual drills during OTAs earlier this offseason, but he still hasn't been cleared medically for full practice. Getting Pitta back will be a bonus for the Ravens, who have prepared for the season as if they won't have their No. 1 tight end available. Following the departure of Owen Daniels, the team used a second-round pick on Maxx Williams, regarded as the best tight end in the draft. Second-year man Crockett Gillmore seems likely for an expanded role in the passing game with fifth-round pick Nick Boyle a candidate for blocking duties.
As for Pitta, he is guaranteed $4 million this season whether he plays or not as part of the five-year, $32-million deal he signed in February 2014.
