Panthers QB Cam Newton isn't thinking holdout

Cam Newton showed tremendous poise and growth in his third year in the NFL. It seems like Newton’s maturity has trickled into the offseason, too.

While the Panthers’ quarterback still has one year remaining on his rookie deal, he is eligible for a contract extension. Newton noted, however, that he doesn’t plan on holding out for a new deal if one can’t be worked out before training camp.

“Absolutely not,” Newton said on the Dan Patrick Show Monday.

Newton is set to make a little more than $3.3 million in 2014, but the team is likely looking to lock him up long-term as the longer they delay the payday, the higher the price gets.

As Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson noted that he wouldn’t rule out a holdout, Newton said their situations are incomparable.

“I think our positions are completely different,” Newton said of Peterson. “Being the leader of this team, I don’t think that would be a good look for me. Not taking anything away from Patrick, he’s an unbelievable player, and an elite corner in the league. But there’s some things cornerbacks can do that quarterbacks can’t.

“I’m not worried about contract discussions right now. My main focus is just becoming the better player I can become.”
