No. 6: The Voters of San Diego

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

San Diego voters hold the continued presence of the Chargers in their electoral hands. A November 8th ballot to build a downtown stadium/convention center annex will require a two-thirds “yes” vote for passage to fill the funding gap necessary for a new stadium. Although the Chargers’ marketing campaign targets taxing those from outside, not inside, San Diego, the 67% threshold is a challenge in today’s economic landscape (even in Packer-crazy Green Bay, we barely reached 52% with our stadium referendum). The real motivation for San Diego voters is this: Failure to pass would likely mean seeing their Chargers go north to Los Angeles to play second fiddle to the Rams.
