Mettenberger: Starting QB job will be 'a fight to the death'

Zach Mettenberger can read the writing on the wall. With the Tennessee Titans drafting Marcus Mariota with the second overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, his hold on the starting quarterback job with the team is very much in jeopardy.

But Mettenberger recently told ESPN’s Adam Caplan in a text exchange that he won’t freely relinquish the starting job to Mariota and refuses to go down without a fight.

But the second-year signal-caller didn’t simply state his admirable and adamant refusal in such terms. Instead, Mettenberger said he’s willing to battle to the death.

“I don’t [know] what the mindset is, but at the end of the day I can just control what I do and I’m extremely confident in myself, almost to a fault,” he said. “But people who know me know I’m not going down without a fight to the death.”

Whoa. It’s safe to say Mettenberger is serious about keeping the starting job. Deadly serious.

Mettenberger’s comments of course shouldn’t be taken quite so literally, but it certainly is an interesting way to articulate his attitude. Instead of battling Mariota to the death, though, perhaps the Titans should steal a page from “Game of Thrones” and instead of having the two quarterbacks battle it out, have them each choose a champion for their quarterbacking, quasi-Trial by Combat.
