Jets WR Brandon Marshall: 'I let my team down'

Brandon Marshall had his worst performance of 2015 on Thursday night, but the New York Jets wide receiver didn’t turn to excuses.

According to Zach Braziller of the New York Post, Marshall said he wouldn’t disclose how much nagging toe and ankle injuries affected him while taking some blame for the 22-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

“I let my team down. I feel bad. I got to play consistent, can’t make a play one week and not make a play the next. So I wish I could’ve helped my team today, and I didn’t.”

In addition to a couple other plays, Marshall dropped a deep pass early in the second quarter and wasn’t able to atone for that mistake a couple snaps later.

Bills corner Stephon Gilmore had better position on this third-and-18 throw, but the ball hit Marshall in the hands. That’s a catch he needs to make, and Marshall knows it.

Marshall finished the outing with three receptions and 23 yards, both of which were season-low marks despite receiving 10 targets. He managed a touchdown but could’ve set up other scores.

While it’s reasonable to expect Marshall to catch passes that hit him in the hands, the injuries are clearly hampering the receiver. Excuses are excuses, yet that doesn’t mean they’re irrelevant.

Credit Marshall for not publicly taking the easy way out, but it’s perfectly fine for us to admit he’s not completely healthy while acknowledging the 31-year-old left some yards on the field.
