Jets' Mornhinweg: Smith-Vick will work beautifully

NEW YORK (AP) Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg says the competition this summer between Geno Smith and Michael Vick will ''work beautifully'' as the two vie for the starting quarterback job.

Mornhinweg insists during a conference call Tuesday that the Jets signed Vick last month for the ''important role'' to push Smith, who was rocky in his rookie season, and make him a better quarterback. The Jets offensive coordinator also says a priority of his is to make sure ''nothing impedes the young quarterback's progression.''

Mornhinweg says Smith will take the first snaps with the starting offense when the team begins on-field practices in a few weeks. He adds that Vick has ''still got it,'' and expects him to play at a high level, setting up what could be an intriguing camp competition.
