Green Bay Packers have a wide-open competition at cornerback
The Green Bay Packers are holding an open competition at cornerback to replace departed starter Tramon Williams, now with the Cleveland Browns. Cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt insists it's anybody's job to win this summer, according to ESPN's Jason Wilde.
"If you play well, you’ll play," Whitt told ESPN. "If you don’t, you’ll sit there and watch."
Sam Shields has one side of the defense locked down, but Whitt and the Packers are now in search of someone to play opposite him. Candidates for the job include holdovers Casey Hayward, Micah Hyde and Demetri Goodson, as well as 2015 draft picks Damarious Randall (Rd. 1) and Quinten Rollins (Rd. 2).
Since it's a wide-open competition, there's no counting out dark horses in the race. Undrafted rookies LaDarius Gunter, Blake Bernard and Travis Manning can force their way into the mix, as can camp projects Tay Glover-Wright and Kyle Sebetic.
Randall, the 30th-overall pick, has the athleticism to play anywhere in the secondary. Whether its at starting cornerback or some other role, Randall just wants to play.
"The best man will win, whether you’re playing corner, slot or nickel," Randall told ESPN. "The best players will play. I’m just really trying to come in and just try to earn my way to play."
The Packers have a lot of intriguing options at cornerback heading into the 2015 season; one of them is bound to stand out as a competent starter.
