Green Bay Packers CB Demetri Goodson: 'I was nervous last year'
Life in the NFL can be a bit of a culture shock for a former basketball point guard. Even though Demetri Goodson had a year at Baylor to acclimate himself to the gridiron after three years on the hardwood at Gonzaga, the Green Bay Packers cornerback had trouble adjusting to the pro game as a rookie in 2014.
Now, heading into his second season, Goodson is feeling much more confident, according to Weston Hodkiewicz of Press-Gazette Media.
"I was nervous last year, to tell you the truth," Goodson told Press-Gazette Media. "Not scared-nervous, but just nervous being on a whole new team and not really knowing what to go off of. This year, I feel confident coming back and having that whole year to get better. Going up against Jordy [Nelson] every day in practice got me a lot better. So I definitely feel like I'm ready."
Goodson considers himself a smarter player than he was last season, per Press-Gazette Media. The former sixth-round selection played in only six games last year, but he's in line for a larger role in 2015. Packers head coach Mike McCarthy thinks he could employ Goodson on special teams.
"He really jumps out at me on special teams," McCarthy said, per Press-Gazette Media. "I think at corner he's still learning more of not what to do, but the identification and what the guy on the other side of the line of scrimmage is doing, he's definitely making progress. Extremely competitive and obviously an excellent athlete. He's definitely moving forward."
Right now, the cornerback competition is stacked. However, if Goodson's athleticism stands out on special teams, he may earn a shot to play defense.
