Davante Adams making slow but steady progress after ankle injury

Published Oct. 6, 2015 1:06 p.m. ET

The Green Bay Packers want Davante Adams back as soon as possible, but the second-year receiver doesn't want to rush his return from an ankle injury.

"I’m trying to be smart more than anything; I don’t want keep messing up," Adams said, per ESPN's Rob Demovsky. "It’s a long season."

Adams injured his ankle in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks, then aggravated it the following week against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Packers played it safe and sat him out this Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers.

"I’m just trying to pretty much take it day-by-day," Adams said, via ESPN. "You want to be smart on it. The last thing I want to do is, I came back last time and re-aggravated it, so I’m just trying to be smart."

Adams was not wearing a boot or walking with a limp on Sunday at Levi's Stadium, according to ESPN. While it's an encouraging sign that he may be back soon, there's really no need to rush the recovery. Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has done just fine with Randall Cobb, James Jones and Ty Montgomery at wide receiver.
