Cromartie: 'I never dissed Tebow'
New York Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie has moved to clarify tweets he made about the Jets not needing Tim Tebow, saying the comments were meant to be a show of support for starting quarterback Mark Sanchez.
Cromartie first took to Twitter Tuesday when reports began surfacing that his team had an interest in Tebow.
"We don't need Tebow," Cromartie wrote. "We sell out every home game. Let him go to Jacksonville, Tampa or Miami."
He was at it again Wednesday before news of the Tebow trade to the Jets broke, tweeting, "Y bring Tebow in when we need to bring in more Weapons for @Mark_Sanchez let's build the team around him."
In an interview with the New York Daily News published Saturday, Cromartie said he did not have any regrets, but felt his comments were taken the wrong way.
"People took it as me dissing Tebow. I never dissed Tebow," Cromartie said.
'I just said we don't need him on our team because Mark is our quarterback. I would never degrade an NFL player because he's in the NFL for a reason.
"Tebow's proven over the past couple years why he's in the NFL. He's been a winner all his life. He's pulled his teams out of predicaments."
Cromartie said Tebow would bring another element to the Jets as the backup quarterback, adding he did not feel the former Bronco's presence would impact Sanchez's confidence, particularly if fans started pushing for Tebow to become the Jets' starter.
"Fans are going to root for who they want to root for," Cromartie said. "They're going to be fans."
"Mark is our No. 1 quarterback. He's our starting quarterback. He's our guy. Tebow's coming in as the No. 2 guy that can push Mark to his full potential. And that's what we're looking for. He's a guy that can bring a spark in different packages. It's a win-win situation for us," he added.
