Chargers LB Barnes fined $5K for hit on Bradford

San Diego Chargers linebacker Antwan Barnes was fined $5,000 by the NFL on Friday for unnecessarily striking St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford in the chest and neck.

Barnes was whistled for roughing the passer on the play in Sunday's game, which came on third-and-goal from the Chargers' 13. The Rams scored a touchdown two plays later to take a 17-0 lead en route to a 20-17 victory that dropped San Diego to 2-4.

The NFL said Chargers linebacker Kevin Burnett wasn't fined for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Bradford because the quarterback was scrambling outside the pocket and therefore considered a runner. There was no penalty on that play.

Also Friday, kicker Nate Kaeding (groin) and outside linebacker Larry English (foot) were ruled out of Sunday's home game against New England. Wide receivers Malcom Floyd and Legedu Naanee, both with hamstring injuries, were listed as doubtful. Tight end Antonio Gates (toe) was listed as questionable. Wide receiver Craig Davis (ribs) and rookie running back Ryan Mathews (ankle) are probable.
