Bill O'Brien: Kevin Johnson has 'bright future'

Published Jun. 19, 2015 12:07 p.m. ET

Cornerback figures to be a position of strength for the Houston Texans this season and beyond, with both the team's starters signed to long-terms contracts. Kareem Jackson re-signed with Houston in March for $4-years, $34 million, while the team gave Johnathan Joseph a three-year, $22 million extension on Thursday. Factor in 2015 first-round pick Kevin Johnson, and the Texans should have both talent and depth at the position for the foreseeable future.

With the Texans offseason program now officially over, head coach Bill O'Brien said the team is pleased with what they've seen so far from the rookie out of Wake Forest.

"Kevin Johnson is a young player who’s got a really bright future," O'Brien said, via ESPN's Tania Ganguli. "He’s learning the pro game. He’s got some really good guys to learn from in his coaches, obviously John Butler, but also Johnathan Joseph and Kareem Jackson."

O'Brien said he's looking forward to seeing more from Johnson in training camp.

"What Kevin does well is he’s a smart guy, he’s a hard worker, he’s a very good transitional player, so he’s able to at times see it and he’s able to transition very well," O'Brien said. "He’s got good quickness. Obviously, we’re in T-shirts and shorts. The key for Kevin, just like all the rookies, is how do they do when the full pads go on? A lot of these guys that are veterans, we kind of know what we have with a lot of these guys. With rookies, we don’t really know what we have until we see what they do in full pads. He would be one of those guys."
