Would San Antonio have defeated Golden State?
This is a question that will eat away at the San Antonio Spurs all summer long: Could they have beaten the world champion Golden State Warriors?
Nobody will ever know the answer, but SB Nation's Spurs blog Pounding the Rock tried to figure it out anyway. Here's an opinion from one of their writers:
"The Spurs have beaten the Warriors eight of the last nine times the teams have met. The Spurs outscored the Warriors by 81 points over those nine. The Spurs were the only team that won the regular season series against GSW. I'm not sure that SA would have won a series, but I'm sure that the Spurs were the team that the Warriors wanted to see the least."
It's safe and fair to say the Spurs were on a short list of legitimate teams that could have stayed with the Warriors in a seven-game series. They match up extremely well, especially on defense, with Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green presumably tasked with locking down Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.
But, alas, nobody will ever know how it would've played out. All we can do is hope Tim Duncan returns, and these two great organizations square off in next year's playoffs.
