Will Sam Hinkie finally use his cap space on a starry free agent?
Philadelphia 76ers general manager Sam Hinkie has carefully carved a ton of cap space for his team this summer. But will he spend any of it now, or let it carry over until next July?
The Philadelphia Inquirer's Larry Atkins is done with all the tanking, and believes now is the time to strike and seriously improve the team's talent level:
"Like most Sixers fans, I’ve had enough with the tanking. They need to go out and start spending salary-cap money on free agents, such as Kawhi Leonard, Jimmy Butler, DeMarre Carroll, or guards Brandon Knight or Reggie Jackson, if Russell goes to the Lakers in the draft. At least make an effort to get a quality player via free agency."
There's nothing wrong with acquiring All-Stars—especially with the salary cap set to spike next summer—but Philadelphia would be wise not to lock themselves into the wrong player.
They're currently building through the draft, and patience is necessary.
