Washington Wizards Announce 2016-17 Training Camp Roster

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Washington Wizards have announced their full training camp roster for the 2016-17 NBA season, including a number of players on non-guaranteed deals.

Before the season begins, every NBA team is optimistic that they made improvements during the summer. Even rebuilding teams, like the Brooklyn Nets and Philadelphia 76ers, embrace the changes that were made and try to create something positive out of it.

That positive feeling that surrounds all 30 NBA teams only lasts so long, though.

Not too long into the season, we’ll quickly find out which teams made the right moves and which teams failed to improve their rosters. Before the season even begins, teams will have the ability to evaluate their rosters internally during training camp.

The Washington Wizards are confident that a new head coach, Scott Brooks, and a revamped second unit is enough to get them back into the NBA Playoffs. In about two weeks, Brooks and his staff will begin the evaluation process.

On Friday, the team announced the full training camp roster.

For simplicity, I’ve only included players that aren’t on guaranteed contracts:

Out of all the mentioned players, Jarell Eddie, who played for the team this past season and performed well during summer league, has the best chance of making the final roster. According to previous reports, Eddie is essentially a lock to make the team.

The others, including former Milwaukee Bucks big man Johnny O’Bryant, are clawing for one of the few remaining roster spots.

Surprisingly, the Washington Wizards didn’t invite any notable veterans to training camp.

Danuel House, Sheldon McClellan and Daniel Ochefu are all undrafted rookies who played for the Wizards during summer league.

All three are on partially-guaranteed deals, which essentially means the Wizards are paying them to attend camp.

Ware does have limited NBA experience and will look to capitalize on Wall potentially missing some time.

The Wizards’ star point guard might end up sitting out of the start of Washington’s camp.

Given the team’s need for a small-forward (Otto Porter and Kelly Oubre are the only traditional threes on the roster), House also has a solid chance to make the team.

He displayed a 3-and-D type of skill-set during summer league, showing his ability to defend the perimeter and knock down shots from deep.

Washington will begin training camp on Sept. 27. Ernie Grunfeld spoke about the upcoming practices:

“Our players have been working hard all summer on their own, with our coaches and in group workouts and we’re all looking forward to building on that as we come together for training camp,” said Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld.  “The city of Richmond and VCU have been tremendous hosts for us in the past and we’re excited to return there to tip off the season.”

The season is inching closer and closer. Training camp seemed to be a lifetime away last month, but it’s already here. Soon, we’ll find out if Grunfeld and the rest of Washington’s brass made the right moves to propel the team back to the top of the East.
